The Naturalist Poet: Finding Inspiration for Poetry through Texas Natural History
Friday – ACC Rio Grande Campus – 11:00am to 1:00pm
Categories: Poetry Writing, Texas Natural History, Science and Art

Instructor: David Taylor PhD, University of Tennessee

Having a basic knowledge of natural history allows a poet not only new ideas and beginning points for writing, it encourages a deeper understanding of place by a cursory understanding of ecology and requires a tactile experience of the natural world. Poetry drawn from such knowledge and inspiration avoids the common problem of the sentimental nature poem by finding deeper, nuanced, quirky, and playful relationships between the writer and the non-human world that surrounds her. David will use examples of Texas natural history and poetry to show successful examples and will give participants exercises to use immediately.
